- Line of scrimmage with a tick where the center lines up.
- One dot = one yard, so route depth is easy: a 5-yard curl is five dots up.
- Yard marks every 5 yards downfield and behind the line.
- The rush line 7 yards off the ball, where an NFL FLAG style rusher starts. Ignore it if your league has no rusher.
- Name, number and formation lines above each field, and note lines on the 4-up page for the QB's first read.
How to diagram a play with our symbols
Use the same symbols as every diagram on this site and the kids will learn one way to read a play.
- Place the offense. Circles with a letter: Q for the quarterback, C for the center, X, Y and Z for receivers, H or R for a back. Our positions page explains each letter.
- Draw each route as a solid line with an arrow. Count dots for depth. The common routes (slant, out, curl, go and more) are on our route tree page.
- Draw the ball carrier's path thicker, or in a second color. On our diagrams it is orange.
- Dash the fakes. A dashed line means "run this but you will not get the ball".
- Dot the handoff from the QB to the runner.
- Number the reads. Put 1, 2, 3 at the end of the routes in the order the QB should look.
- Add defenders only if you need them. Triangles, drawn where you expect them. See our defense pages for how common defenses line up.
Tips for drawing plays kids can run
- Draw in pencil. Most plays change after the first practice.
- For 6U and 8U, keep routes to one cut. If a route needs two sentences to explain, it is too hard.
- Space receivers at least 5 dots apart at the line, so one defender cannot cover two of them.
- Write the first read on the note line. If you cannot name it, the QB will not know it either.

Questions coaches ask
How big is a flag football field?
NFL FLAG lists a 5 on 5 field 30 yards wide and 70 yards long with 10-yard end zones, and some leagues use smaller fields. The last page of the 5 on 5 PDF is a full-field diagram with midfield and the no-run zones. Check your league, and see our rules page.
What is the red dashed line on the sheet?
The 7-yard rush line. Under NFL FLAG style rules the rusher starts at least 7 yards from the line of scrimmage. Many younger divisions have no rusher, so you can ignore it.
What is the difference between the 5v5 and 7v7 sheets?
The 7 on 7 fields show more room downfield, because 7 on 7 teams run deeper routes, and the position list includes the extra players.
Can I print the sheets on a black and white printer?
Yes. The sheets are mostly white with thin gray lines, so they print fine in black and white and use little ink.
