Wristband windows are not one standard size. Brands differ, and youth and adult bands differ. We made the template in two sizes we see often, but measure the clear window on your own band with a ruler before you print.
| Template size | Made for | Pages in the PDF |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 x 2.5 in | Most teen and adult wrist coaches | 12 boxes, 8 boxes, 6 boxes, fold-over |
| 3.5 x 2.25 in | Smaller youth wrist coaches | 6, 8 and 12 boxes, fold-over |
- Print at 100%. In the print dialog pick "Actual size" or 100%, not "Fit to page". Each page has a line that should measure exactly 1 inch; check it with a ruler before you cut.
- If your window is a bit smaller, trim the outside edge. If it is quite different, change the print scale (for example 90%) and measure the test line again.
- Card stock or regular paper both work. Regular paper is easier to fold; card stock holds up better in the rain.
6, 8 or 12 boxes?
Younger players look for their own circle and one arrow, so give them fewer, bigger boxes. Older players can read a name like "Trips Flood" and know the play, so 12 boxes works.
Numbering systems that work with kids
- Runs low, passes high. Runs 1 to 6, passes 7 to 12, trick plays after that. The QB knows what kind of play it is from the number alone.
- Formation in the tens. For 10U and up: plays in the 10s come from one formation, plays in the 20s from another. "23" means the third play from your second formation.
- Colors or animals for 6U. Five-year-olds remember "Blue" or "Tiger" better than "7". Write the word in the box and color the corner.
- Same card for everyone. Every player wears the same card with the same numbers, not just the QB. The coach calls "Seven" and all five kids look at box 7.
- Never renumber mid-season. Add new plays at the end instead. Kids who learned that 4 is the sweep will run the sweep when you call 4.

How to fit cards into a 3-window wristband
A 3-window wrist coach has clear sleeves stacked like pages, so a player can flip between up to three cards. Bands differ, so look at yours, but this is the usual way to use one:
- Cut out each insert on the dashed line.
- Decide what goes in each window. A common setup: window 1 is your main plays, window 2 is extra or red-zone plays, and window 3 is defense or a spare.
- For more plays in one window, use the fold-over page in the PDF. It is two panels joined by a fold line. Fold it so the blank backs touch, and you get 12 plays on the front and 12 on the back. On the stacked version the back panel is printed upside down on purpose, so it reads the right way up when you turn the folded card over side to side, like a page.
- Slide each card in with the numbers facing out, and check that it does not bunch up. If it does, trim a sliver off the long edge.
Want the diagrams printed for you?
This template is for writing or drawing plays by hand. If you would rather have the play diagrams printed in the boxes, with your players' jersey numbers in the circles, use the free playbook builder: pick your plays, then print "Wristband cards". Want to draw your own play first? The designer adds it to the builder.
Questions coaches ask
What size is a flag football wristband insert?
There is no single standard. Our template has 4.5 x 2.5 inch and 3.5 x 2.25 inch inserts because those sizes are common, but measure the clear window on your own band and trim or rescale to fit.
How many plays should go on a wristband?
For 6U and 8U, six or fewer with big diagrams. For 10U and older, eight to twelve is common. More plays on the card does not help if the team cannot run them.
Do all players wear a wristband or just the QB?
Every player is better. When the coach calls a number, every kid can check their own job instead of asking the QB in the huddle.
Can I use this for defense too?
Yes. Write your defensive calls (for example Man, Zone, Blitz) on a separate card and put it in another window.
Is this template free?
Yes. Download it, print as many as you need and share it with your league.
