Two-Line Passing Warm-Up (youth flag football drill)
Two lines face each other and throw across, and every passer follows the throw to the back of the other line. Every kid throws and catches, nobody stands still for long, and a boring warm-up turns into real passing practice.
Setup
Put two cones 8 yards apart to mark the two throwing spots, with a second cone 3 yards behind each one to mark where the line waits. Split the group into two lines behind the cones, facing each other (A, B and C on the left, X, Y and Z on the right). The first player in the left line holds a ball. Keep the second ball at the cone for later. With more than 10 kids, set up a second station so the lines stay short.
How to run it
- The first player in the left line (A) steps toward the target and throws to the first player in the right line (X).
- Right after the throw, A jogs around the outside to the back of the right line. Everyone follows their own throw.
- X catches with the hands, tucks the ball, then throws back to the next player in the left line (B) and follows that throw.
- Keep it moving for 2 minutes, then bring in the second ball so there is almost always a pass in the air.
- Round 2: the catcher jogs 3 steps toward the thrower before the ball is thrown, so every catch is made on the move.
- Round 3: count the catches in a row out loud as a team. A drop starts the count over.
Coaching points
- Point the front shoulder at the target, step with the front foot, then throw.
- Hold the ball with the fingers on the laces and a little space between the palm and the ball.
- Catchers show a target: hands up, thumbs together, before the ball is thrown.
- Follow through so the throwing hand finishes down by the opposite hip.
- Say the catcher's name before every throw. It gets eyes up and stops surprise passes to the face.
Common mistakes
- Throwing flat-footed with the chest facing the catcher. Turn sideways first.
- Lines that are too long, so kids wait more than they throw. Make a second station.
- Catchers trapping the ball against the chest. Catch it with the hands, then tuck it.
- Starting too far apart. A wobbly pass that gets there beats a spiral that falls short.
Make it easier
- Start 5 yards apart and let 6U players toss underhand.
- Use a smaller or softer ball so small hands can grip it.
Make it harder
- Move the lines back to 12 yards for 12U and older.
- Throw on the run: the passer jogs two steps to the right before throwing.
- Catch, tuck and turn upfield in one motion before throwing back.
