Spacing (5v5 flag football play)
X clears deep on the left while three receivers fill short spots from the middle to the right: H in the right flat about 1 to 2 yards deep, Z on a 5-yard hitch near the right sideline, and C sitting in the middle at 5 yards, just right of the ball. Each short receiver stops in an open gap between zone defenders, so the QB only needs a quick throw to whoever is uncovered.

When to call Spacing
Against zone defenses that sit back and guard areas. It is a good call on any down when you need 4 or 5 yards and want a quick, safe throw.
Who gets the ball
- Watch the defender near Z. If they stay back with Z, throw to H in the flat right away.
- If that defender runs up to H, throw the 5-yard hitch to Z.
- If both are covered, throw to C sitting at 5 yards in the middle, in the gap the other defenders left open.
Coaching points
- Every short receiver (H, Z and C) stops and turns to face the QB once they reach their spot. A short receiver who keeps running carries the defender with them. X is the only one who keeps running, all the way to about 15 yards, to take the deep defender away.
- C runs 4 yards, then slides right to about 5 yards and looks for the empty space between defenders. If a defender is standing there, C moves a step or two to get away from them.
- Z lines up about 3 yards from the right sideline, runs hard for 5 yards so the defender backs up, then stops and turns inside toward the QB. H stays inside and underneath Z, never running through Z's spot.
- X runs straight downfield on the left to pull the deep defender away from the short throws on the right.
- The QB throws on time. Take the snap, read H then Z then C, and let the ball go within about 3 seconds.
Common mistakes
- Receivers bunch up in the same area. Mark the spots with cones in practice so each player learns to keep 4 or 5 yards of space between them.
- The QB stares at one receiver and throws into a defender. Teach the QB to watch the defender near Z, not the receivers, and throw away from where that defender goes.
- C sits right next to a defender. Fix it by teaching C to find the open gap and stand still in it with hands up.
What to call next
When defenders start jumping the short throws, call Slant and Go or have Z fake the hitch and run deep. Against tight man coverage, switch to Mesh so receivers cross and lose their defenders.
