Zone Drop and Break Drill (youth flag football drill)
Three defenders drop back to their zone cones, settle with their eyes on the QB, then break on the throw. It teaches the two things zone defense depends on: getting to your spot fast and reading the QB's eyes.
Setup
Set three cones 10 yards deep: one on the left, one in the middle and one on the right, 8 yards apart. Three defenders (L, M, R) start 3 yards off the line of scrimmage, each lined up in front of their cone. The coach or QB (Q) stands 3 yards behind the line with a ball.
How to run it
- On "Hike", the defenders open their hips and run back to their cones, keeping their eyes on the QB.
- At the cone, each defender stops, gets the feet under them, and faces the QB.
- The QB looks one way, then throws to a spot between two zones.
- The closest defender breaks on the ball and tries to catch it or knock it down. The others sprint toward the ball.
- Rotate so every defender plays all three zones.
Coaching points
- Eyes on the QB the whole time. The QB's eyes tell you where the ball is going.
- Get to the cone first, then react. Guessing early leaves a hole.
- Break forward at the ball, not sideways. Take the shortest path.
- Everybody runs to the ball. The first defender there is the one who makes the play.
Common mistakes
- Backpedaling slowly the whole way. Turn and run, then face the QB at the cone.
- Watching a receiver instead of the QB, so the defender reacts late.
- Two defenders both chasing the same spot and leaving their zones empty.
Make it easier
- Drop to 7-yard cones and have the QB point before throwing.
- Use two defenders instead of three.
Make it harder
- Add two receivers who run through the zones.
- The QB fakes a throw one way before throwing the other way.
